Ecology

Building better with light gauge steel framing, with less.

Recyclable steel, dry site, reduced waste: light gauge steel framing is a concrete answer to environmental requirements.

Our approach

Environmental performance is built upstream.

Steel is the most recycled material in the world: it can be remelted endlessly without losing its properties, and our production offcuts go back into the recycling stream.

Manufacturing to the exact dimension eliminates site cutting: less waste, fewer skips, fewer return trips.

We offer European steel supply chain low-carbon steel low-carbon steels for projects targeting a reduced footprint from the structure up.

Environmental advantages of LGS

Less material wasted, less mass transported, a recoverable structure.

Actual performance always depends on the complete building, its insulation, use, service life and material sourcing. Here is the specific contribution of the LGS structure.

Right

amount of material

Material use optimised through engineering
Section dimensions and thicknesses are matched to the actual design forces. This optimisation aims to deliver structural performance using the necessary amount of material, without adding unnecessary weight.

Precise

manufactured to specified dimensions

Controlled production waste
Lengths, holes and cut-outs are defined digitally before delivery. Metal offcuts are collected at the factory, sorted and sent for material recovery.

Lightweight

less mass to move

Lighter transport loads
The strength-to-weight ratio of cold-formed steel enables the transport of low-mass structures. Packaging and loading sequences are planned to minimise unnecessary handling.

XCarb®

on request

Lower-footprint steel option
Available on request, the XCarb® recycled and renewably produced range helps reduce the material footprint. Its performance is documented in a verified environmental product declaration.

Durable

zinc-aluminium-magnesium protection

Structural longevity
Steel does not rot or crack and is not susceptible to insect attack. The Magnelis® coating protects sections against corrosion when they are specified and installed in accordance with their exposure class.

Screw-fastened

easier separation

Demountable connections
Components are primarily joined using mechanical fasteners. Designing for disassembly can make it easier to modify the building, separate components and reuse them where their condition permits.

Circular

recoverable material

Recyclable steel
At the end of its service life, steel retains its material value and benefits from established collection networks. It can return to steel production rather than becoming waste for final disposal.

Lower

permanent loads

Potentially smaller foundations
A lighter superstructure transfers lower loads. Depending on the geotechnical assessment and the chosen construction system, this can reduce the material volumes required for foundations and their associated impact.

The virtuous cycle

Ecology at every project step.

  1. 01

    Responsible material

Recycled and recyclable steels, durable coatings, low-carbon options.

  2. 02

    Exact-length production

Every profile is cut to the exact length: no surplus, no site offcuts.

  3. 03

    Clean site

Dry assembly, no water or cutting dust, minimal packaging.

  4. 04

    Light logistics

Light, compact panels optimise truck loading.

  5. 05

    Managed end of life

Disassembly possible and material taken back into the recycling stream.

Steel and timber

Light steel and timber: a comparable carbon footprint.

A study published in Building and Environment (Morris, Allen & Hawkins, 2021) compares a glue-laminated timber structure with a steel structure. When end-of-life recycling is modelled according to current standards, timber falls within the same range as steel: no clear ranking emerges.

The result depends heavily on the method used: end-of-life treatment, biogenic carbon accounting and the time horizon. Light steel therefore stands up well against timber, without either material being declared superior.

Our additional strengths

  • Steel is infinitely recyclable with no loss of quality.
  • It does not rot and is unaffected by insects or humidity changes.
  • The structure is light, so foundations are reduced.
  • Factory precision limits material offcuts.
  • With low-carbon XCarb® steel, the structure's footprint falls further.
